Cinco de Mayo is this Saturday, May 5, and there’s no better neighborhood than Avenida Houston that celebrates the holiday. Whether someone is a resident or visitor, one can’t be in the area on May 5 and not either learn a little history from a proud Houstonian on Mexico's victory over France or see a beautifully-ornate parade that celebrates Mexican culture. But what would a real Cinco de Mayo in the Culinary and Cultural Capital of the South without some mouthwatering tacos or smooth tequila? Luckily, you don’t have to wonder. Here are the best places at Avenida Houston to celebrate in style.
It’s no secret that Landry's trendy downtown hotspot serves up some of the best Italian food and wine in town. Add that to a chic industrial space and patio lounge, and the result is the best place to sip and enjoy an Italian margarita. The traditional cocktail (served all day on May 5) comes with a top note of amaretto, for that Italian flavor. Grotto Downtown is across the street from Discovery Green, on the corner of Rusk and Avenida de las Americas.
The owner of Houston’s cult favorite breakfast spot brings a little culture to Avenida Houston with Kulture. The hip restaurant serves up an unforgettable mix Caribbean and Southern cuisine with flavor and flare. So on May 5, Kulture will add specialty margaritas and tequilas to it’s Saturday happy hour menu, available from 4-7pm. Stop by the new restaurant located next door to LAUNCH on the corner of Rusk and Avenida de las Americas.
Xochi offers a Cinco de Mayo 4-course brunch on May 5 from 11 am to 3 pm with cocktail specials for $7.50. Happy hour with special drinks presented by Espolon Tequila and Grand Marnier will also be available from 2:30 to 6:30 pm. To top it off, live music will keep things upbeat from 5 to 9 pm, including mariachi during the first hour. Xochi is inside the Marriott Marquis Houston, on the corner of Walker and Avenida de las Americas. Not to mention the 2-hour free parking available at the Avenida North garage for all three restaurants.
