What is Avenida Houston
Avenida Houston is the place to sip, stroll and savor in downtown Houston. The name “Avenida” comes from Avenida de las Americas, the boulevard that fronts the George R. Brown Convention Center (GRBCC) and runs from Minute Maid Park to the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel.
As part of the exquisite landscaped design, the 97,000-square-foot Avenida Houston includes Discovery Green’s 12-acre park, public art installations, as well as two convention headquarter hotels adjoined to the GRBCC, the Hilton Americas-Houston and the Marriott Marquis Houston. The area around Avenida Houston also has many other activities, dining and retail options for guests, as well as unique meeting spaces for evening receptions. Additionally, there are three main parking garages: Avenida North, South and Central.
Guest have several options to choose from for activities around Avenida Houston as the GRBCC sits next to the Toyota Center and Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Rockets, Houston Astros and dozens of annual concerts. A few short blocks away, soccer fans can see the Houston Dynamo or Dash, the professional men’s and women’s soccer teams.
While dining at Avenida Houston, visitors will get a taste of why Houston is named the Culinary and Cultural Capital of the South. The plaza serves as the gateway to excellent cuisine from land and sea, with nearly 20 restaurants in the immediate vicinity, including five restaurants within the GRBCC on Avenida de las Americas.
Transportation options also expanded with the 24-mile METRORail lines connecting Avenida Houston to the Theater District, Downtown Houston's hotspots, the Texas Medical Center and NRG Park, the home of the Houston Texans, Rodeo Houston and more. In addition, there are more than 4,000 parking spots accessible to visitors in the three covered garages on Avenida de las Americas.
Discovery Green, GRBCC and the Hilton Americas predate Avenida’s 2014 construction, while the plaza/GRBCC makeover and construction on the Marriott Marquis Houston finished in December 2016. Inside GRBCC, five previously separate convention halls interconnect with a concourse that runs the length of the ground floor. The former eight-lane thoroughfare in front of the GRBCC has taken a new shape as a two-lane, one-way route that still provides access to the 663-car garage (Avenida Central) under Discovery Green, while also providing a more pedestrian-friendly and connected experience for attendees.
Residing at the north end of Avenida Houston is Partnership Tower and a 1,820-car parking garage. The building is home to Greater Houston Partnership, Houston First Corporation and Houston Sports Authority. These groups work together to make Houston the greatest place to live, visit and experience.
With events, festivals and other programs taking place along Avenida de las Americas, in Discovery Green and within the hotels and convention center, there is always something going on.
Welcome to Avenida Houston!
