Avenida Houston To Unveil World Premiere Art Installation

Avenida Houston will soon be home to a one-of-a-kind cultural experience with the world premiere of Weci | Koninut, an immersive outdoor art installation celebrating Indigenous stories, seasons, and traditions. Opening Thursday, June 26, this groundbreaking project invites the public into a dreamlike environment that blends large-scale visual art, sound, and storytelling inspired by the Atikamekw people of Canada.

Created by First Nations artists Julie-Christina Picher and Dave Jenniss, Weci | Koninut uses light, sound, and sensory technology to transform downtown Houston into a reflective, interactive space. The installation features six luminous dreamcatchers, each representing one of the Atikamekw’s six seasons—from Pitcipipon (pre-winter) to Takwakin (autumn). As visitors move through the space, the structures activate, creating an ever-changing atmosphere that invites people to listen, feel, and connect.

The project is produced in collaboration with two Québec-based creative powerhouses—Creos and Init—both known internationally for producing world-class interactive public art. Together with Houston First, they’ve brought this ambitious experience to life with the goal of making contemporary Indigenous art accessible to wider audiences around the world.

Weci | Koninut is more than just visually striking—it’s deeply rooted in Indigenous history and culture. The installation draws inspiration from Notcimik, a sacred territory of the Atikamekw people, and invites reflection on our relationship with the land, our collective memories, and the importance of honoring ancestral knowledge.

This debut in Houston marks the beginning of an international tour for the installation. As it makes its way around the globe, it will carry with it a message of cultural connection, environmental awareness, and artistic collaboration. In placing the work in a public, urban setting like Avenida Houston, the artists aim to create space for dialogue, contemplation, and the celebration of Native traditions in a modern context.

Open to the public and free to experience, Weci | Koninut promises to be a highlight of Houston’s summer arts calendar. Whether you’re drawn to its visual beauty, cultural depth, or interactive elements, this is a rare opportunity to step into a world shaped by Indigenous wisdom, creativity, and imagination—right in the heart of the city.
