Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! In this day and age, introducing eco-friendly habits into a daily routine is easier than ever. Carpooling, using a stylish water bottle, buying green products or bringing reusable bags to the store are just a few ways to recognize Mother Earth. There are also plenty of fun ways to celebrate Earth Day, in addition to sustainable acts, with family and friends. Here are 5 things to do this weekend at Avenida Houston to celebrate Earth Day while helping the environment:

1. JAM on The Green

Grab some friends, rideshare over and get ready to jam out at Avenida Houston during Da Camera JAM on Friday, April 20. The free concert series, a collaboration between Discovery Green and jazz/chamber music enthusiasts Da Camera, celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month throughout April. The second concert on April 20 features Houston jazz singer Raquel Cepeda with local jazz pianist (and biostatistics professor) Jose-Miguel Yamal as the opening act. The concert starts at 6:30 pm.

2. Dynamo Soccer

On Saturday, April 21, hop on the METRORail to check out the Houston Dynamo as they take on the Toronto Football Club at BBVA Compass Stadium. The state-of-the-art, 22,000-seat stadium is the only soccer-specific Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium in a U.S. that’s located downtown. Houston Dynamo are 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup Champions.

3. Time to Stretch

Get your downward dog on this Saturday, April 21 at Discovery Green. Led by certified instructor Lindsey Law, hatha yoga is designed to build a strong, healthy body. There’s not pre-registration required here. Just come as is with a towel, water and yoga mat (or buy on-site).

4. Earth Day Houston

Sunday, April 22 is Earth Day! The annual Earth Day Houston at Avenida Houston’s Discovery Green makes learning fun for all. From 12 pm to 6 pm, people can drop their wheels off at a bike valet before seeing an Art Car adorned with plastic pollution and an electric car “petting zoo.” Or, to learn about energy inefficiencies and protecting the atmosphere, visitors can step inside both a “tiny house” and a Metro bus. 5. Music Unplugged

This free music series opens at Discovery Green in celebration of Earth Day (Sunday, April 22). Canned Acoustica is where musicians let loose and perform unplugged sets at Transier Bandstand on the Grace Event Lawn. To coincide with the park’s Earth Day Houston celebration, there will be an “Earth Day Edition,” featuring performances from Fat Tony, Hogan & Moss, Max Flinn, Arthur Yoria, The Broken Spokes, Heapin Helpin and Giant Kitty. The show starts at 1 pm.
